The 60 cadets of 284 (Cheadle & Gatley) Squadron get to enjoy the following activities:

Learning to fly the Grob Tutor 115 light aircraft (as pictured above) at RAF Woodvale with 10 Air Experience Flight (AEF) Squadron, or at one of the other 11 AEF Squadrons around the country.
Flying solo (at 16 years of age) in the Grob Vigilant powered glider and Grob Viking non-powered glider after completing 10 hours of gliding at a Volunteer Gliding School (VGS) Squadron. We are the largest gliding club in the world!
Shooting with the No 8 (.22) bolt action rifle, or the L98A1 Cadet General Purpose, magazine fed rifle on 25m or 100m indoor and outdoor ranges.
Complete the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards by participating in expeditions, physical training and assist the community.
Participate in sports competitions, representing Cheadle & Gatley, or East Cheshire & South Manchester, or even the North of England in the following sports:
- Football
- Netball
- Hockey
- Rugby
- Table-tennis
Spend a week at an RAF station, visiting its sections and squadrons, with additional opportunities for flying, gliding and shooting. Try some work experience.
Enjoy military fieldcraft training, encompassing military doctrine, radio communications, individual and group battle skills and drills on British Army training areas, such as Leek, Altcar, Nescliffe or Swynnerton.
Socialise with young adults, your age, both from Cheadle & Gatley and also through out East Cheshire & South Manchester.

About 284 Squadron

284 Squadron was formed in 1941 for the Cheadle & Gatley area. We currently have 39 enrolled cadets and 21 recruits. Roughly 65% of the cadets are male, 35% female. We have 2 officers, 2 adult senior non-commissioned officers and 9 civilian instructors. All of our staff have had CRB and security checks.

In the summer of 2006, our Squadron Headquarters was extended, doubling its size and adding disabled facilities.

We never have waiting lists - we're never full. But, we do have "recruit intakes". This guarantees that many people start at the same time, thus having something in common and making it more likely that they will become an effective team. Our next intake is in January 2007.
